Welding bay on the Red Oak Fabrication shop floor

AWS D1.1 Certified Welders and Robotic Welding Cells in Iowa

For heavy equipment OEMs, steel buyers, and plants across the Midwest.

Red Oak Fabrication welds steel to AWS D1.1 code across 13 welding stations — two robot cells, one cobot cell, and ten manual pulse-MIG bays. We staff 11 AWS D1.1 certified welders, each with a 3G rating. Big OEM runs go to our Genesis Fanuc robotic arms; custom frames go to our Fronius synergic pulse-MIG welders. Either way you get full weld penetration, low heat warp, and clean code compliance.

Welding Equipment & Specifications

Our shop mixes robot speed with skilled hand work. That lets us take a one-off prototype or a full production run. Here is the full list.

Genesis Systems Cells
2 Cells • Fanuc Arms
High-volume repeat OEM runs, welded to the same program every time.
Universal Robots Cobot
4′ × 8′ Table
Programs in minutes, so short batches get robot consistency without robot setup.
Fronius Pulse-MIG Bays
10 Bays • Synergic Pulse
Custom frames and large weldments, welded by hand to code.

AWS D1.1 Code Compliance & Certification

Integrity requires verifiable proof of welder skill and process control.

AWS D1.1 Qualification
Our welding processes strictly adhere to AWS D1.1 (Welding Code - Steel) governing heavy plate and shapes.
3G Position Certification
Our 11 certified welders hold 3G vertical-up position certifications, qualifying them for groove and fillet welds across flat, horizontal, and vertical orientations.
Multi-Material Capability
Certified processing across carbon steel (A36, A572), stainless steel (304, 316), and aluminum alloys (6061, 5052).

In-House Finishing for Welded Assemblies

Operator powder coating a welded steel assembly in the paint booth

Most welded assemblies leave the shop to get finished. Ours don’t — blasting, pretreatment, and coating happen on the same floor, so there’s no freight leg and no second vendor between the weld and the finish.

80-Grit Steel Media Blasting
Every weldment is blasted clean before it moves on. Weld slag, spatter, mill scale, and rust come off, so coating bonds to bare metal instead of contamination.
3-Stage Chemical Pretreatment
Blasted parts move into our wash line for degreasing, rinsing, and surface conversion. This is the step that ensures the finish holds up outdoors for years.
AAMA 2605 Powder Coating
Electrostatic powder is applied and cured in-house to AAMA 2605. The top architectural tier for UV, chalking, and salt-spray resistance.

Quality Assurance

Every part is documented, measured, and inspected before it ships — the same discipline Red Oak has run on for more than a century.
Production Monitoring

Every job is tracked from raw material intake through final inspection, on mill-traceable stock.

Precise Calibration

Key dimensions are checked on a calibrated CMM before parts move downstream.

Certified Welders

Eleven AWS D1.1 certified welders, each qualified to 3G position — with every weld inspected before it leaves the bay.
